Ancient monuments,
snug coastal towns, rocky headlands, miles of sandy beaches, rugged
mountains, gourmet restaurants, speciality food growers, humor,
passion and a language of their own combine to make the region
know as "west Cork" a very special part of Ireland.
Itinerary in brief
Day 1
Arrive Shannon or Cork and travel to the fertile plains of East Cork. In the
village of Shanagarry is Ballymaloe House estate, home to the wonderful Allen
family, our hosts for the next two days. Dinner will be from the kitchen of Darina
Allen whose passion and hard work has inspired much of what is currently happening
in the Irish food revolution. Overnight Ballymaloe House.
Day 2
We spend the day walking along the south coast cliffs at Ballycotton
overlooking the Celtic Sea. In the afternoon we visit the workshops of some local
craftspeople. We also take a tour of the gardens at Ballymaloe. Overnight Ballymaloe.
Day 3
This morning we head west for a walking tour with a local historian in the port
town of Kinsale, the site in 1601 of the most famous battle in Irish history.
After lunch we head for Ross Carberry and a meeting with a local scholar to learn
of the passion and purpose of Michael Collins, the man that so affected Ireland?s
battle for independence. A great afternoon walking the beach at Ross Carberry.
Overnight Schull.
Day 4
A boat trip out to Cape Clear Island to explore on foot this island which is
home to 200 native Irish speakers. A gourmet picnic lunch accompanies amazing
views of the Cork coast and the Atlantic Ocean. Overnight Schull.
Day 5
Mizen head is Ireland?s most southerly point and today we explore this
long narrow finger of land. We will walk over places rich in myth and legend
where the dramatic sea and cliffs carry a strong energy. Overnight Schull.
Day 6
A morning of easy exploration of the region's abundant megalithic
ruins before stopping at the local food emporium for a cheese tasting.
Then off to the tip of the wildest peninsula in Ireland, Beara, for
an afternoon of walking near the Dursey Sound. Overnight Kenmare.
Day 7
One last day to walk along the northern coast of the Beara
Peninsula and enjoy Ireland's scenery at its best. We head back into
Kenmare with time for a look into the many colorful shops. Farewell
dinner and some traditional music. Overnight Kenmare.
