West of Ireland Hiking Tour

SAMPLE ITINERARY

Wild flowers on the Burren and Aran Islands, luxury guesthouses and country hotels, a 7-day hiking tour on the Wild Atlantic Way, taking in the Burren, Inismore / Aran Islands, Connemara and Mayo.

Days 1-2 – Inis Mór, Aran Islands

The first two nights of our West of Ireland Wild Atlantic Way walking tour are spent on the timeless island of Inis Mór, the largest of the three Aran Island’s located at the mouth of Galway Bay. A wild stony place, our introductory stroll is among the labyrinth of stonewalls (3000 miles of them!) and provides a powerful welcome to the west of Ireland! One of our favourite walks (on Earth!) follows the stupendous cliff scenery along the south coast of the island where over 300 foot cliffs and Atlantic swells, the extraordinary flora of Aran grows in tiny pockets of soil amidst limestone rock – flora ranging from arctic to tropical to alpine, all growing side by side.
Days 3-5 – Connemara

Returning to the mainland, we hike over Roundstone Bog before reaching Lough Inagh Lodge, our base for three nights located in the heart of the Connemara mountains between the ranges of the Beanna Beola (the Twelve Bens) and the Mám Toirc (Maumturks).

Day 4 – Hiking along the Western Way
Directly from the lodge, hiking along the Western Way hiking route through a wild landscape rich in nature, history and myth.
Day 5 – The island of Omey & The fjord of Killary
A morning hike in the company of Ireland’s leading field archaeologist, Michael Gibbons on the island of Omey brings us up close and personal with thousands of years of archaeology and history.
Day 6 – Galway City & Hiking in the Burren
Time to explore the bustling city of Galway this morning before an afternoon hike over Abbey Hill in the region known as the Burren and arrival in the village of Ballyvaughan, our base for two nights.
Day 7 – The Burren Way
A treasured landscape of international importance, the Burren holds a trove of treasures from nature and human history that is utterly unique.
