Oscar nomination for Jessie

Jessie Buckley

Go n’eirí leat Jessie – le beannachtaí Naomh Bhríd ort

Less than a week after Biddy’s Day, Saint Bridget’s Day when on February 1st we celebrate the coming of Spring in the Irish, the passing of winter, fertility and rebirth and renewal lightness – that our neighbour, Killarney’s Jesse Buckley has been nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar has had even the early lambs around here kick their heels a little higher. From her childhood days performing in school and local community shows in town through to her first lonely steps to London and the West End in pursuit of her art, through her musicals to the screens of television and film and now her stellar reputation, Jessie’s wonderful journey has been always been paralleled with a deep pride in her from her community and place.

Born into a family with deep historical and cultural connections here illuminated with strong, powerful women through the ages that are her direct ancestors, Jesse carries the gratitude and wishes of her community. It was her younger brother Killian who on reading the news at his home in Chamonix told his sister of the nomination (- around the same time as Sky News was claiming her as a British actress – making her granny and revolutionary great-grandmother turn in their graves!). We wish you the best Jessie…
